The following is a list of the fifteen states with the highest benefits for active duty, reserve, and veterans of the military based on the resident tuition costs of the state. Benefits are determined by tuition coverage per credit hour as well as flat fees given per term. This list is designed to help military students decide where to go to school and includes a comprehensive sub-list of military-friendly universities based on each state.
All these universities offer online education, so you can participate in hybrid learning (combining campus-based classes and online classes), or pursue your degree completely online through distance learning! When browsing your potential college campuses, don’t forget schools and universities that are online-only and tailor their education to military personnel, such as American Sentinel University and Walden University.
1. Texas, at a maximum of $1,333 per credit hour, $12,130 fees per term
Texas, the Lone Star State, is the leading provider of credits by hour for military active duty, reserve, and veterans. South Texas Vo-Tech is located in this generous state. Saint Leo University, a leading provider of military education, also has a branch in Texas. Texas is an excellent state of residency for online students due to the highest credit hour rate.
2. New York, at a maximum of $970 per credit hour, $3,457 fees per term
New York offers a generous credit per hour, but the fee coverage is average. Despite the smaller size of the state, it is abundant with different postsecondary schools. Berkeley College, found in both New York and New Jersey, has highly recommended campus-based and online curriculums at the baccalaureate level.
3. Michigan, at a maximum of $953 per credit hour, $18,421 fees per term
Michigan is home to some of the greatest lakes in the world and is named after Lake Michigan, taken after the Objiwe term mishigama for “large lake.” Michigan has an abundance of both government-funded and private schools that can be found here.
4. New Hampshire, at a maximum of $933 per credit hour, $4,768 per term
New Hampshire is a smaller state, ranking in the bottom 10 states for population and land area. They offer a generous amount of financial aid for veterans for the few schools located within their state. Among the list of colleges for New Hampshire are mostly private colleges and a thin amount of online schools.
5. Pennsylvania, at a maximum of $700 per credit hour, $8,205 fees per term
Pennsylvania is a colonially historic state that is known as the Keystone State for being part of the original thirteen colonies. It offers high credits per hour, a benefit for online students; however, as far as campuses go, Pennsylvania’s college selection is thin. This is a recommended location of residency for distance learning due to the higher credit hour rate.
6. Flordia, at a maximum of $682 per credit hour, $3,172 fees per term
Florida, the Orange State, has an abundance of military-friendly universities. Saint Leo University’s main campus is located in Florida, but they have campuses also located in California, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia, as well as programs done 100% online. Saint Leo University was the first military-friendly college to establish classes on an Air Force base. Also located in Florida are these prestigious, online-friendly, military-friendly schools: Full Sail University; Jones International University; and Everest University.
7. Wisconsin, at a maximum of $663 per credit hour, $30,979 fees per term
Wisconsin has both a high credit per hour rate and a high fee per term rate for active duty, reserve, and veterans of the military. Milwaukee is home to many universities in Wisconsin, although in the majority of Wisconsin’s rural regions, distance learning is an optimal source of education. 8. Delaware, at a maximum of $590 per credit term, $665 fees per term
Delaware is an extremely small state comprised of only three counties. Nonetheless, it’s financial benefits to veterans are superb. Due to its small size, Delaware does not have many universities. A complete list of Delaware’s colleges can be found here.
9. Illinois, at a maximum of $558 per credit term, $5,126 fees per term
Illinois is a smaller populated state with most of its education and commerce thriving in Chicago. They offer a steady credit and fee amount for military college students. A comprehensive list of Illinois colleges can be found here.
10. Arizona, at a maximum of $490 per credit hour, $127 fees per credit term
Arizona, the Grand Canyon State, is the home of the reputable Arizona Automotive Institute. Grand Canyon University, a regionally accredited, non-denominational Christian school also offers online and campus-based degree programs in Arizona.
11. Utah, at a maximum of $488 per credit hour, $2,176 fees per term
Utah boasts several rewarding universities such as the Certified Career Institute, University of Phoenix, and and Westminster College. Utah is known for its beautiful rock scenery and provides an excellent location for any campus-based or distance education.
12. Connecticut, at a maximum of $486 per credit hour, $1,946 fees per credit term
The United States Coast Guard Academy is located in Connecticut. This school does not have any online-only programs, although they have several online communities and resources to supplement their campus-based education. They are the smallest of the five U.S. service academies.
13. Ohio, at a maximum of $477 per credit hour, $12,280 fees per term
The state of Ohio is the seventh most populated location in the United States. It is home to Ohio University, founded in 1804. Since the beginning of Internet-based education, Ohio University has been delighted to offer an online college experience to its student body. They are well-known for their online Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) degree.
14. Colorado, at a maximum of $419 per credit hour, $43,035 fees per term
Colorado is a green, rainy state rich in untouched, rolling hills and boasting the beautiful Colorado River. Everest College has campuses based in Aurora, CO and Thornton, CO. 15. Oregon, at a maximum $407 per credit hour, $42,828 fees per term
Oregon‘s state bird is the yellow-tummy Western Meadowlark. Education prospects in Oregon are just as bright as the state bird, with artistic programs at the Art Institute of Portland (also found online) and Lutheran-structured studies at Concordia University. For military students interested in a healthcare degree, Oregon’s Western State Chiropractic College was the first chiropractic college to receive funding from the U.S. Health and Resources and Services Administration and is a great place for a physical and occupational therapy degree.
