Game-Based History Class Offered at Florida Virtual School
Florida Virtual School (FLVS), one of the leaders of high school online education, released an online history class done completely through a computer game. The game, called “Conspiracy Code,” is meant to aid students that otherwise have difficulty learning through an interactive and entertaining environment.
The game was designed in cooperation with 360Ed. It is the first of a line of game-based online courses to motivate students to engage in their learning experience. The project started in 2005 when Ben Noel, chief executive of 360Ed, met with Julie Young, CEO of FLVS.
Students adopt the roles of fictional espionage characters and embark on a mission to learn more about American history. Only by learning about history can they stop a conspiracy around changing and even erasing history itself.
Noel claims American history was the first subject to be used to test out the game-based virtual class because humanities have a less rigid structure in their curriculum, so long as the end result standards gleaned from the classroom match up. American history is also one of the top ten courses registered for at FLVS.
