Second Life Graduation Ceremony
Bryant and Stratton College held their 2009 commencement ceremony online, through their unique Second Life learning environment. Second Life is one of the newest successes in online education.
Students take classes together in a virtual world, similar to popular video game worlds like Sims and World of Warcraft. After participating in classes together in this creative distance learning environment, students attend a virtual commencement ceremony where, in their Second Life visage, they gather with their classmates and experience all the classic attributes of graduation:
- Their name is read by a school official and they are handed a virtual diploma
- Honors are read, and students with highest academic honors give speeches to the virtual audience
- They celebrate in a virtual gathering area after commencement, complete with a live band
Of course, when all is said and done, they still receive their online degree from their reputable online school in the mail.
